Herbal Formulas for Sinusitis Relief - safety & efficacy

In Traditional East Asian Medicine there are two properties in herbs used for sinus inflammation and infection that are contraindicated and DANGEROUS for many people. It is of VITAL importance that you seek the advice of a licensed herbalist prior to starting any herbal intervention.

The two properties that are EFFECTIVE but must be applied with caution are:

  • anti-mucolytic (drying property)

  • anti-biotic / anti-microbial (cold property)

Generally speaking, these types of herbs must be avoided by Children, Pregnant and Lactating Women; those taking certain medications; cancer patients; and many other conditions.

These herbs have been used for thousands of years and are known to be effective. In fact, many prescription drugs are derived from these herbs. Misuse of herbs and improper prescriptions have consequences including death and government oversight (banning and restricting use). So, please use this medicine wisely and judiciously so that it can be available with ease for generations to come.

WHY IS THE GUIDANCE OF AN HERBALIST IMPORTANT?

The process of identifying correct herbs for a condition can be complex. A Licensed Herbalist and Practitioner of East Asian Medicine will consider your whole health to understand if the condition and symptoms are the result of an imbalance that is INTERNAL or EXTERNAL. We seek to discover if the symptom is due to the body being deficient and needing a supportive approach? Or, is the symptom due to the body being attacked by an “external pathogen” ? In this case one would use an approach that would purge, reduce, excrete etc? Sometimes it is a combination of both and in this case the herbal approach may require a custom formulation or a combination of formulas.

Another imbalance herbalists consider is whether the condition is HOT or COLD. Inflammation is generally considered a HOT condition - think of red, hot and swollen tissues. To treat this condition, cold herbs are used. Viruses are generally considered a COLD pathogen and to treat this condition warming herbs are used. But what if your body is fighting a virus (cold) and is suffering from inflammation (hot)? Ask an herbalist.

Other considerations include: Are the symptoms due to EXCESS or DEFICIENCY? Are the symptoms in the UPPER, MIDDLE, or LOWER body?

See? It can be quite involved.
